Bayswater start cup defence with big win

Bayswater City began their defence of the Cool Ridge Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win against First Division side Ashfield at Frank Drago Reserve.

Damien Catalano got them on their way after 23 minutes, while Declan Hargreaves added a second before half-time.

New signing David Heagney added a third, before substitutes Adrian Caceres and Sahr Musa put the icing on the cake.

Coach Chris Coyne was happy with the performance, as the club look to defend the trophy they won last season and the prize of entering the inaugural FFA Cup another huge incentive.

“We’re delighted with the win today. We were successful in the cup last year, and we want to defend it,” he said.

“There is such a massive prize there at the end of the year to the winner of the competition, and if we keep performing like that we’ll be there or thereabouts.”

The shock of the round came at Beldon Park where Second Division side Joondalup United beat First Division Bunbury Forum Force 3-2.

Garin Collins, Arran Maplestone and Marc Beatie were on target and Coach Daniel Smith was delighted with his sides’ performance.

“I was proud of the boys’ attitude and commitment going into the game today. We knew how hard it would be and they were up for it. It's nice to still be alive in the cup with our first ever state league season about to kick off,” he said.
