Bayswater City began their defence of the Cool Ridge Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win against First Division side Ashfield at Frank Drago Reserve.
Damien Catalano got them on their way after 23 minutes, while Declan Hargreaves added a second before half-time.
New signing David Heagney added a third, before substitutes Adrian Caceres and Sahr Musa put the icing on the cake.
Coach Chris Coyne was happy with the performance, as the club look to defend the trophy they won last season and the prize of entering the inaugural FFA Cup another huge incentive.
“We’re delighted with the win today. We were successful in the cup last year, and we want to defend it,” he said.
“There is such a massive prize there at the end of the year to the winner of the competition, and if we keep performing like that we’ll be there or thereabouts.”
The shock of the round came at Beldon Park where Second Division side Joondalup United beat First Division Bunbury Forum Force 3-2.
Garin Collins, Arran Maplestone and Marc Beatie were on target and Coach Daniel Smith was delighted with his sides’ performance.
“I was proud of the boys’ attitude and commitment going into the game today. We knew how hard it would be and they were up for it. It's nice to still be alive in the cup with our first ever state league season about to kick off,” he said.
On the day all NPL-WA sides made it through to the next round, after facing tricky looking ties against lower league opposition.
Sorrento beat Swan United 6-0 at the Swan Italian Club, with Mike McGinley scoring a hat-trick. Inglewood United won for the first time this season with a 4-1 win against North Perth United at Woodville Reserve.
Sean Browne scored twice, while Ryan Francis and Ryan Clarke adding the others. Perth SC thrashed Port Kennedy 7-2 at Dorrien Gardens with Mark Doninger scoring four; Cockburn City beat Wanneroo City 4-0 at Dalmatinac Park, while Balcatta beat Melville City 5-0 at Len Shearer Reserve.
Floreat Athena had to work hard to beat Perth Royals 3-1 at the E&D Litis Stadium, Stirling Lions were made to fight for a 2-0 win against Joondalup City at the Iluka Sports Complex, ECU Joondalup beat Forrestfield United 3-0 at the ECU Sports Arena, Subiaco AFC beat Mandurah City 6-2 at the Hyundai Stadium, while Armadale beat Dianella White Eagles 3-1 at Dianella Reserve.
