Asylum seekers deal

Asylum seekers held on Manus Island will be released and given work rights and freedom of movement should they be found to be refugees, the Papua New Guinea Government has said.

In a major shift, PNG said yesterday it would create a special refugee visa and indicated the first groups of asylum seekers could have their claims for protection completed within a month.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison, who met his PNG counterparts in Port Moresby this week, said the process of accessing asylum seekers was "well advanced".
