Expansion plan for Midland centre

Midland Gate shopping centre is set for a $150 million expansion to make it one of the biggest in Perth.

A Department of Planning panel is expected to approve plans to expand the centre when it meets today.

The proposal seeks to extend the centre, at the corner of Great Eastern Highway and Cale Street, by 18,000sqm to increase the total area to almost 76,000sqm.

It would make Midland Gate bigger than Garden City shopping centre, as it now stands, and Morley Galleria.

There are plans to double the size of Garden City.

Carousel shopping centre, the biggest in Perth, has a total area of about 80,000sqm.

Midland Gate expansion plans were approved in June 2012 but developers asked for an extension of time and lodged amended plans that included the addition of a giant LED video screen on the upper level.
