Truck crash, fire closes highway
Truck crash, fire closes highway

One truck has been destroyed by fire after what appears to be a head-on collision with another truck on Great Northern Highway today.

The incident happened about 12.30pm near the Newman turnoff between Roebourne and Port Hedland.

“It appears to have been a head-on collision,” Port Hedland Sergeant Jason Gentili said.

“One of the trucks was burnt out and the other was about 100m down the road but appeared to have only minor damage.

“All we know at this stage is one driver is fine and the other has been taken to hospital as he’s in-and-out of consciousness… but that is likely to be due to shock more than anything.

“Both sides of the Great Northern Highway have been closed along with the North West Coastal Highway, heading toward Newman,” he said.

“At the moment the forensics team are out there and the road is expected to remain closed for a couple of hours.”
