A 95-year-old man has been airlifted to hospital after he was trapped for more than 30 minutes under a P-plate driver’s car.

It is understood the man was guiding his granddaughter into a carpark at Murdoch University’s Rockingham campus just before 9.30am when she hit the accelerator instead of the brake and ran over him.

The man was trapped under the car for half an hour before he was freed by emergency responders and flown to Royal Perth Hospital via the RAC Rescue helicopter.

Police said the man sustained a serious arm injury from the incident and could lose part of his arm. He is in a stable condition.

The force of the vehicle in reverse caused a second vehicle to be shunted from its parked position.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said the man appeared to be in good spirits.
