A 20-year-old man has been charged after an hour-long police chase in the Great Southern last night.

The Pingrup man allegedly drove away at speed after police attempted to stop him on Albany Highway, north of Mount Barker, at 6.30pm.

The man allegedly led police on a chase on and off road and was stopped after police used a stinger on the highway near Cranbrook.

He was charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, having no authority to drive and driving a vehicle displaying false number plates.

He is scheduled to appear in Albany Magistrate's Court later this month.
