Stewart jokes about gay label

Patrick Stewart has taken to Twitter to assure people he is not gay.

The 73-year-old actor was perhaps confused with his X Men co-star and close friend Ian McKellen when a newspaper article about Ellen Page's recent coming out speech labeled him gay.

The Guardian article initially read, "Some gay people, such as Sir Patrick Stewart, think Page's coming out speech is newsworthy".

However, the British publication was quick to issue an apology to Stewart for identifying him as homosexual, which the film veteran addressed in several light-hearted tweets.

"But @guardian I have, like, five or even SEVEN hetero friends and we totally drink beer and eat lots of chicken wings!," Stewart wrote.

He later tweeted: "Well, @guardian it makes for a nice change...at least I didn't wake up to the internet telling me I was dead again."

Stewart wed Sunny Ozell last September in a ceremony officiated by McKellen, who is openly gay.
