Tourist critical after Gnarabup rip

An Italian tourist nearly drowned after he was caught in a rip at a South West beach yesterday.

Police Insp. Steve Jones said the 25-year-old man was swimming with friends when he got into trouble at Gnarabup Beach near Margaret River about 3.30pm and was dragged out to sea.

He said four surfers brought the swimmer to shore and emergency services crews arrived and performed CPR.

St John Ambulance took the man to Margaret River Hospital and he was later flown to Jandakot Airport by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

He was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital overnight.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.
