Olympic great Ian Thorpe is reportedly considering cutting short his visit to Sydney and returning home to Switzerland, after intense public scrutiny over his health.
Thorpe was injured in a fall and admitted to hospital on Wednesday night, News Corp Australia reported.
But Thorpe's mother Margaret told News that reports he had been admitted to rehab were overblown.
"We're very, very angry at the moment," she said. "You can imagine how you would feel if you'd gone in for something simple and it's portrayed that he's in rehab for depression and alcohol."
Broadcaster Alan Jones, a close friend of Thorpe's, had told media the swimmer had been going through some problems recently.
"Yes, it's serious but there's not a lot I can or want to add," Jones said on Thursday night.
"Ian is a beautiful person but he has difficulty recognising his problems."
Thorpe's mother told News the swimming great "loves living in Switzerland, [because] he's left alone."
