A young man was held hostage in his own car last night then burned when the assailants set the vehicle alight.

Police are appealing for information about the violent Balcatta carjacking, which left the victim in a serious condition in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

The 21-year-old was driving his Toyota Hilux on Cedric Street about 8pm when he stopped at an intersection. A white VR or VS Holden Commodore pulled up behind him.

A man got out of the Commodore and punched the victim through his driver's side window then pulled him out of the car and shoved him into the back seat.

A police spokesman said another man then got into the Toyota and the offenders drove off with the man held captive in the back seat.

They drove around for about 20 minutes before dumping the car and its owner on Cedric Street near Balcatta High School.

But the nightmare did not end there for the 21-year-old, who received burns to his arm and leg when the offenders doused his car in a flammable liquid and set it alight.

St John Ambulance paramedics took the man to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Anyone who saw either vehicle or was in the area between 8pm and 8.30pm is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
