Children questioned over blaze

Four children – the youngest of whom is just eight – are being questioned over a suspiciously lit fire in Middle Swan today.

Police confirmed three youths (aged 12, 10 and 8) from Middle Swan and a 14-year-old from Swan View were in custody tonight but no charges had been laid.

Firefighters had to request air support to battle the blaze near the Perth SpeedDome and Moorditj Noongar Community College.

The fire was reported about 12.40pm and burnt through scrub near Roe Highway and Eddie Barron Drive.

Houses, Swan Tafe’s Midland campus and the Midland Sports Complex were within about 500m of the fire ground.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said 10 fire trucks were deployed to the scene.

The blaze was brought under control by 2pm.

Arson Squad detectives are still investigating a number of suspiciously lit fires from last week, including in the Perth Hills suburbs of Darlington and Parkerville — the scene of a blaze that destroyed 56 homes this month.

Anyone with information on the fires is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
