Man charged over cocaine importation

A 29-year-old Colombian man has been charged after he allegedly imported 5kg of cocaine into Australia.

The man was arrested as part of a joint Australian Federal Police and Western Australia Police operation in East Perth yesterday afternoon.

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service also provided assistance during this operation.

The investigation began on January 15 after the AFP received information from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding their seizure of two packages originating from Mexico which contained cocaine.

On January 22, AFP and WA Police Organised Crime Squad Investigators undertook a controlled delivery to the intended recipient in East Perth.

The man has been charged with importation of a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and attempting to traffic a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.

He appeared in Perth Magistrates Court today where the matter was adjourned for mention in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on February 12.
