Child burnt as car is set on fire

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a car fire that has injured a child.

Firefighters, St John Ambulance and police were called to a house on Yangebup Road in Yangebup at 2.45pm.

Emergency services were told that a car was on fire and that a child - a six-year-old girl - had been burnt, a police spokesman said.

Police remain at the crime scene this evening as they investigate the cause of the fire, which destroyed the car.

Officers are investigating whether the girl was in the car at the time of the fire.

Police were unable to confirm reports that a neighbour pulled the child from the burning car.

A St John Ambulance spokesperson said the girl was taken to Fremantle Hospital suffering superficial burns to her arms.

It is understood that police were told a person ran to the driveway and set the car alight while the girl's parents were inside the house.

A tow truck was at the house this evening, taking the burnt car away for investigation.
