A fire which caused about $300,000 damage to a cray fishing boat near Port Hedland has been deemed suspicious.

The fire on board the large boat started while it was in a junk yard in Wedgefield, 15km south of Port Hedland at 2.42am.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews took more than an hour to extinguish the blaze.

The police Arson Squad is understood to be investigating the fire.
