Dr Hames said the best thing people can do to help fire victims is to donate cash to The Lord mayor's fund.

He said the final count of homes lost is 46.

Emergency Services Minister Joe Francis said his thoughts and prayers are with victims but that it could have been worse.

He said DFES modelling showed 450 homes could have been lost if firefighters did not get control yesterday.

The Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund was activated today to raise and coordinate donations to support the victims of the Hills fire.

The fund is the recognised State emergency fund and provides relief for personal hardship and distress arising from natural disasters.

Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said she was saddened by the devastating impact of the fire, the loss of life and the extensive loss and damage to property.

“The fire demonstrates clearly how people’s lives can change suddenly when events such as this happen,” Ms Scaffidi said.

“Most people would be shaken by the weekend’s events and through the LMDRF they can help those people who are suffering now and who face such a big job in rebuilding or cleaning up after the fires are extinguished.

“The fund is run by an independent board and all the money goes to victims, with donations of $2 and above being tax deductible.

“The appeal is set up in a way that allows assistance to be dispensed rapidly.”

Donations to the Parkerville Fire Appeal can be made over the counter at any BankWest branch or agency to the dedicated appeal account BSB 306-089, account 323311-7, by EFT to BankWest’s appeal account BSB 306-089, account 323311-7, in person at the Customer Service counter at Council House, 27 St Georges Terrace, Perth, on the phone for credit card donations, 9461 3886 during normal business hours and by mail to LMDRF, Perth Hills Fire Appeal, c/- City of Perth, GPO Box C120 Perth WA 6839.
