The family of a British man went into shock when his Facebook page made the announcement he had died on the operating table.

Rod Smith, of West Peckham, Kent, was having a routine groin operation when a hacker broke into his social media account and updated his status to: "Unfortunately Rod died this afternoon due to complications during an operation at Maidstone Hospital".

This is Kent website reports that friends and relatives of the 45-year-old phoned his mum and dad with condolences, leaving his parents shocked and confused.

"When my dad came to pick me up he looked like he had been bawling his eyes out," Mr Smith said.

"It is so sick that someone could do that. I was shocked. I couldn't believe it.

"It's bang out of order. It would have been devastating for my children if they had seen it."

The offending post has since been deleted and Kent police are trying to trace the hacker.

Mr Smith's mother Ann, 63, described the prankster as "sick".

The post has since been removed from Smith's Facebook account, and he has been advised to contact Facebook administrators for assistance in tracking down the hacker.
