Fun idea takes flight

Ask Danch Lee why he spent $15,000 building a water-powered jet pack and his answer is simple - "because it looked like fun".

Four years ago, the Albany resident watched a YouTube video of a man soaring through the air with the aid of an American jet pack.

Mr Lee was immediately taken in by the invention but soon realised the only way he would get his hands on one would be to import it at a cost of $100,000 - or build his own.

The engineer decided to put his skills to the test and set out to build a water-powered jet pack using just a handful of photos from the internet.

"There wasn't much to go off four years ago because it was quite a new product, so I just had a few pictures to base my project off," he said.

"I have spent a phenomenal amount of time on it. I've been working on it or thinking about it almost every day for the past few years."

Mr Lee used a 3.8-litre Commodore engine and a jetski hull to create the device, which pumps about 120l of water a second as it propels him 9m into the air.

He has added safety features and has taken great delight in teaching friends how to use the jet pack.
