It has taken 40 years and a Facebook campaign but Australian rockers AC/DC have finally broken into the British Top 10.

The band's 1979 single Highway To Hell has reached No. 4 on the British singles chart for Christmas.

It is the first time AC/DC has made it into the top 10 singles in Britain and comes a week before the 40th anniversary - on December 31 - of their first gig. The Facebook page devoted to the campaign, organised by the same group which rallied to push Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name Of to No. 1 in 2009, has more than 170,000 "likes".

When Highway To Hell was released in 1979, it reached No. 40 in Britain. It made it to No. 24 in Australia.

AC/DC's previous highest British single was Heatseeker in 1988, which peaked at No. 12.
