Chris John announces retirement

Perth-trained boxing star Chris John has announced his retirement two weeks after suffering the first loss in his 52-fight career.

The 34-year-old Indonesian, who trained under Craig Christian in Balcatta and Jakarta, made the announcement yesterday.

John lost his WBA 'Super' world featherweight title to South African Simpiwe Vetyeka at Metro City, in Northbridge, on December 6 when he retired on his stool after six rounds.

A world champion since 2003, he finished with a record of 52 wins, one defeat and three draws.
