Nature is best playground

Regina Eccleston-Wirth's winning entry.

To Kate Smith, the long grass at the Willagee football oval was just lawn that needed mowing but to her four-year-old son Harrison, it was a cubby just waiting to be explored.

The Smith family are one of the winners in the Nature Play Spring into Spring photo competition, which sends five families on a four-day holiday to Camp Quaranup in Albany during the school break.

The competition, organised by Nature Play WA, _The West Australian _ and the Department of Sport and Recreation, asked families to send in photos of their children interacting with nature.

Ms Smith, a mother of three, said her family was over the moon to win the prize.

Joe Powers, who submitted a photo of his son Samuel playing in a tree, Mark Jones, Regina Eccleston-Wirth and Claire-Helen Linton were the other winners.

Nature Play WA chief executive Griffin Longley said there had been a lot of outstanding entries.

"Spring is without doubt the best time of year to get outdoors," he said. "For families looking to get out into the bush to go camping over the coming weeks, I would recommend they access the Nature Play WA and Department of Parks and Wildlife websites and make the most of what is a very special time of year."
