UPDATE 5pm: A bushfire watch and act has been issued for people south-west of Harvey.
The warning has been issued for people in an area bounded by Hope Avenue, Treasure Road, Mitchell Road and Bernies Road, north of Benger Swamp Nature Reserve, 11km south-west of Harvey.
The fire has been partially contained and there is still a possible threat to lives and homes.
Tracy Spence, who lives on Mitchell Road, said the fire came within 200m of their home.
“We had to move the animals closer to the house, it was a bit of a panic,” she said.
Ms Spence said it was lucky the wind was blowing the blaze away from their house.
“If the wind turns back then we will be worried but at the moment it’s going the other way,” she said.
“I’m not worried at the moment but that could change very quickly.”
The Department of Environment and Conservation is working closely with neighbouring landowners who have been notified of possible threats to their properties, so far there has been no property loss.
The bushfire is moving in a west-north-westerly direction away from South Western Highway. It has burnt through about 300ha.
Mitchell Road has been closed to non-local traffic.
About 60 DEC, DFES, Forest Products Commission and Shire of Harvey volunteer bushfire brigade fire crews are in attendance and are being assisted by WA Police.
Fire crews are working to build and strengthen containment lines and protect properties. Heavy earth moving machinery, two fixed-wing water bombers and a type one helicopter are in use.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
