Police have identified the murder victim whose head was found at Rottnest Island in a plastic bag earlier this week.

Major Crime Squad detectives revealed this afternoon that the man's identity was determined using forensic methods.

The man was a resident of Perth.

Police say the identity cannot be revealed because his family is yet to be told.

Major Crime Squad detectives are continuing their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A murder investigation began when a family discovered the head in a plastic bag at Porpoise Bay.

Earlier this week police revealed that the victim was a Caucasian man aged between 30 and 60 years old.

He was missing seven of his front upper teeth and did not wear a plate or dentures. His other teeth were also in poor condition.

The man's teeth had been missing for several years.

The man had a moustache and full beard that extended below his chin.

He did not have any ear, nose, lip or tongue piercings.
