Update: Services on the Mandurah line have been cancelled for this afternoon with commuters advised to find an alternative way home.

The Public Transport Authority released a statement at about 3pm today stating services were not expected to resume for afternoon peak hour.

Trains on the Mandurah Line ground to a halt at about 12.25pm due to a fault with the overhead power line south of Murdoch Station.

It is not yet known what caused the problem.

Public Transport Authority of WA spokesperson David Hynes said that a number of trains were affected by the loss of power but fortunately for passengers, all trains were at stations enabling them to disembark the vehicles.

Had this not been the case, commuters would have been stuck in the carriages in 39C heat.

“We have trains travelling between Mandurah and Rockingham and we’re arranging buses from Perth,” Mr Hynes said.

Replacement buses are running between Perth and Rockingham and trains are operating between Rockingham and Mandurah.

A PTA spokesman said it is hoped normal services will resume by 9pm in time to deliver Mandurah Line patrons to their New Year’s Eve festivities and home again in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Joondalup Line is running between Clarkson and Esplanade Station with services adjusted to a 15-minute frequency.

The other lines are unaffected.

The disruption to services raises concerns for people planning to travel to Perth for a New Years Eve event or down to Rockingham for the fireworks on the foreshore.
