Update, 5.15pm: Fire crews are battling a bushfire in Perth's southern suburbs this evening.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority says the fire has been contained but not controlled. There is no threat to lives or homes.

Heavy smoke closed the Kwinana Freeway, bringing both lanes to a standstill this afternoon.

The fire started near Bertram Primary School in the Town of Kwinana at about 1.15pm and was moving along Johnson Road, towards Thomas Road.

Three helitacs and volunteer and career firefighters in 16 appliances are working to extinguish the blaze, which was moving fast in a north-easterly direction.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a bushfire advice for people in the eastern part of Bertram, near Millbrook Avenue and Price Parkway, and in the western part of Casuarina, near Bombay Boulevard and Landgren Road.

“Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes,” the department says.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site.

The cause of the fire is not known.

WA police, the Department of Environment and Conservation and Western Power are also at the scene.
