The WA Labor Party has unveiled its plans for rail in Perth, flagging $1.6 billion worth of funding for two new lines and a number of extensions across the metropolitan area.
Opposition leader Mark McGowan announced more than 75km of rail as part of Labor's "Metronet" system, naming five priorities projects to be completed within eight years if Labor win next year's election.
Two new lines will be built-one to the airport and another to Ellenbrook, both originating at the existing Shenton Park station.
Two new circle routes will also be constructed-the northern circle route will connect the existing Joondalup line with the proposed Ellenbrook line while the southern circle route will see the Thornlie line extended between the Mandurah and Armadale line and connect to the proposed airport line.
On the northern line, an extension would be built from Butler to Yanchep.
Mr McGowan said Perth's congestion had hit crisis point and the existing rail system was struggling to cope.
"Over the past eight years, the number of people boarding Perth trains has doubled," he said.
"Poor planning by the Barnett Government has resulted in a public transport network that can't meet the needs of our growing city, making it harder for people living in Perth."
Mr McGowan said the Barnett Government had the wrong priorities and contributed to congestion by making bad decisions like cancelling Greenwood station and the Ellenbrook railway.
