The man’s 29-year-old friend was found dead after being plucked from the water off Redgate Beach at about 1.30pm.

The dead man has been named as American tourist Ian Bradley Vincent.

It is understood a third man raised the alarm after two men were caught in a rip.

Relatives of the men spent some time at Redgate Beach today as the search continued for the missing 22-year-old.

The swell was about 2m smaller than yesterday but winds picked up, making the search more difficult.

A police spokeswoman said the marine and air search started at first light with a helicopter, three Volunteer Marine Rescue vessels and two jet skis. A number of State Emergency Services personnel were also deployed on the beach.
