Retired neurosurgeon Bryant Stokes has been appointed by the State Government to conduct an inquiry into the troubled Peel Health Campus.

Health Minister Kim Hames announced the independent review today, after Premier Colin Barnett earlier in the week revealed that an inquiry would be established.

The Premier and the Health Minister have previously been cool on the idea of an inquiry.

Allegations, including fraud, corruption and witness intimidation, have been made against HSWA by the parliamentary estimates and financial operations committee, which recommended an independent inquiry.

Mr Barnett said that while he did not rule out an inquiry, the didn't think one was necessary.

Dr Hames he had read the committee’s report with some concern but said while the allegations were serious they were “less than earth-shattering.”

Today, Dr Hames acknowledged the work of the Estimates and Financial Operations Committee and the issues identified in its report.

“Quite clearly the State Government needs someone who comes from a medical administration background to review the allegations that have been raised,” Dr Hames said.

“Under the contract between the State Government and Health Solutions, the Department of Health has the authority to review Peel’s service delivery, governance and other issues.

“In addition, eminent neurosurgeon Professor Bryant Stokes will undertake a review of the Peel Health Campus.

”Professor Stokes will be empowered to conduct a thorough review under the Public Sector Management Act.”

The Minister said Professor Stokes’ review would start immediately and focus on the evidence brought before the committee.

“The Government’s primary concern is the standard of health care available to the Peel community. I acknowledge the dedication of medical and support staff to the people who rely on this health service,” he said.

“If this review finds any evidence of serious wrongdoing, it will be dealt with and referred to the appropriate authorities.”
