Hedland has been named WA's tidiest town.

The Pilbara community, made up of Port Hedland and South Hedland, was announced as the overall winner of the Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities awards in Fremantle on Friday.

Keep Australia Beautiful WA chair Mel Hay said Hedland had demonstrated a commitment to improving the town's infrastructure and environment and further developing positive relationships among people in the community.

Esperance received a special commendation for its whole community approach to litter prevention, maintenance of amenities, caring for the environment and providing for the needs of people of all ages.

Hedland is now eligible for the national Tidy Towns - Sustainable Communities awards to be announced next year.
