Brave decision to open with a winning label

It's not always that a fashion festival kicks off with a big marquee name.

While Milan Fashion Week will open tonight with global mega-brand Gucci, the first cab off the rank at Paris Fashion Week will be under-the-radar Belgian designer Veronique Branquinho, who is relaunching her label after several years.

But in a small town such as Perth, your safest bet is to get the biggest names in the local industry to begin proceedings.

Perth Fashion Festival director Mariella Harvey-Hanrahan has done that in the past with mixed results. This year, the PFF team has made the brave decision to open with One Fell Swoop, a label that has won the WA fashion industry's highest accolade - Most Innovative Designer Award - but which remains comparatively unknown.

But it makes sense to give the winners of this award, which acknowledges creativity as much as commercial success, with opening honours at PFF.

It's a great way to introduce the label to those who may not be familiar with the aesthetic of One Fell Swoop, which is stocked only in a handful of boutiques in WA.
