Cattle rescue after fire

Thousands of cows are being trucked to safety after fire ripped through a Kimberley pastoral station, turning their food supply to ashes.

Country Downs owner Kurt Elezovich has been granted permission by the Shire of Broome and Main Roads to move the cattle on three-trailer road trains along Cape Leveque Road to other stations and places where they can be agisted.

Mr Elezovich described watching years of hard work go up in smoke as he battled to save his home and family from a fire that tore through an area bigger than Perth and its surrounds.

The blaze front had moved away from the homestead on Country Downs by Monday and was still out of control and unpredictable.

Mr Elezovich was confident it was safe, along with his wife Nikki and sons aged five and two.

He has turned his attention to the welfare of more than 4000 cattle on the 175,000ha station about 100km north of Broome after more than 90 per cent of the property was ravaged by the flames.

Broome Shire chief executive Kenn Donohoe said about 15 heavy triple road trains limited to a maximum speed of 40km/h would carry out the transfer operation over the next fortnight.

"They are doing that to move cattle to other stations or other places for agistment and also to bring back feedstock for a number of cattle retained at the station," he said.
