Help to weed out problem with pamphlet

Ord Land and Water's Dick Pasfield has produced a pamphlet to identify weeds like the neem tree he's standing in front of.

A new pamphlet will aim to provide East Kimberley homeowners with a guide to weeds and advice on how to control and eliminate them.

Produced by Ord Land and Water and funded by the Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley, the pamphlet targets a dozen "residential" weeds including caltrop, neem, hyptis and snakeweed.

Program co-ordinator Dick Pasfield said the pamphlet followed on from publications which focused on pastoral weeds found on cattle stations.

"In the towns you can get completely different types of weed which can impact on the environment, so we have created a pamphlet to specifically focus on those residential weeds," he said.

"It's so that people can actually know what they've got in their garden and they can look at a plant and say 'that's a weed' or 'that's not a weed' and make up their mind on what they do with it."

"We often get people that look at a plant in their garden and say 'that's a really pretty plant', and it may look nice, but it is actually a noxious weed."

Mr Pasfield said after using this pamphlet to identify weeds, people could also get advice on how to manage and eliminate them either by hand or with chemical sprays.

"Neems are an example of a plant that is not only starting to pose a nuisance or a threat to the environment outside the town but also in people's backyards," he said.

"You often hear of people who have one neem tree in their backyard one year and then all of a sudden they have a forest because the neems will continue to come up and they have a major job of removing those seedlings."

The pamphlet is available at various businesses and offices.
