Plan to nab kerb crawlers

The City of Vincent is considering a high-tech surveillance system that captures images of vehicles and stores licence plate information to help track kerb crawlers looking for sex on residential Highgate streets.

The council is considering the strategy after a police blitz in the area resulted in four arrests, nine summons and 50 move-on orders.

Police spent 71 hours on patrol in Highgate over seven days to April 14, as part of a reignited operation targeting street prostitution in the area.

Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan said the statistics proved more needed to be done to stamp out street prostitution and protect residents.

"The police blitz was effective but these sorts of high-resource measures cannot be kept up long-term," she said.

"We're spending ratepayers' money to put measures in place and we need police to come up with a long-term strategy and support our efforts."

The council will this week consider a comprehensive CCTV system for the Stirling Street area, where licence plate images would be stored and filtered to determine which vehicles are trawling the area.

Once a pattern is established, a report would be sent to WA Police for further investigation.

Ms MacTiernan also wants to name and shame people convicted of soliciting in the area, as an additional deterrent.
