Man loses legs after being dragged under tram for three kilometres

A man has lost an arm and his legs after he was caught beneath a tram for three kilometres while passengers heard his screams.

German tabloid Bild reported that the tram drove through six stations before a passenger pulled the emergency break.

The man became trapped upside down between couplings after he tried to jump between two tram cars in the German city of Dortmund.

“Several passengers later said they had heard his cries for help but couldn't tell where they were coming from,” Dortmund police said in a statement.

A pool of blood was left at each stop.

Tram operator DSW21 spokesman said the driver of the tram would be given counselling

The Daily Mail named the man as Jan Norman and quoted a medic at the scene saying "It was a terrible sight to behold."

"The poor guy had literally been flayed alive during this nightmare. It was heartbreaking."

Mr Norman's mother's Silke told the Mail she was at a loss as to how the tram could have continued for so long without stopping.

A police probe into the incident is underway.
