A new breed of Aussie hibiscus

There are quite a few different native hibiscus around Australia that are making their way into our gardens. Every State has its own species and Australian plant breeders are working on crossing different species to develop some beautiful hybrids.

Hibiscus Aussie Delight is a very hardy, fast-growing native shrub that will add colour to your garden with a prolific display of perfumed light-pink flowers to 12cm from late winter through to summer.

The flowers contrast well with the attractive glossy-green foliage and red-brown stems.

Aussie Delight is the result of several generations of careful cross-breeding and selection based on the Australian native species, Hibiscus heterophyllus and Hibiscus divaricatus, to produce a compact bushy plant with few prickles and an extended flowering period. This hibiscus makes a great feature shrub for open exposed sites or as an understorey plant in part shade.

Aussie Delight will grow in most soil types and doesn’t appear fussy at all about soil type.

It will grow to about 1.5-2m high and 1.5m wide. It is also a great potted plant or background plant in a native cottage garden.

Water well at planting and gradually reduce watering during establishment.

Prune by one-third after a flush of flowers and fertilise once a year in early spring with a complete slow-release fertiliser for Australian native plants.

DID YOU KNOW?

People may not realise that you can eat the petals and flower buds of our native hibiscus. They can also be used for jam, syrup and cordial.
