Sewage fouls Canning River

Perth residents are being urged to avoid contact with a section of the Canning River after a sewage overflow in Gosnells.

The sewage entered the river near Astley Street and could take between 48 and 72 hours to dissipate to safe levels.

The WA Health Department has advised people to stay out of the water near Astley Street and avoid paddling or swimming upstream of the Kent Street weir.

Warning signs have been erected on the foreshore.

A Water Corp spokeswoman said the overflow was caused by a communications malfunction at the Astley Street pump station.
