The Traitors fans were confused as three contestants returned to the show — in the same clothes they left in days ago.

The tense BBC series returned for a third series on 1 January but hopefuls Jack, Alexander and Fozia didn't make it into the game. They had been on the train to the Traitors castle along with everyone else but elected to get off after the contestants were told there were three people too many in the carriages.

They reappeared in the episode on Wednesday, 8 January, with another shot at joining the rest of the group. But many viewers were confused by the fact they hadn't changed their clothes since they were last seen several days ago.

The opening episode of the new series — which is hosted by Claudia Winkleman — saw the contestants travelling to the castle in a train when they were told that one person had to get off of each carriage, with no idea of what would happen to them next.

Jack, Alexander and Fozia all chose to get off. But in the latest episode the contestants were taken to a clearing in the forest where all three were in cages up high in the trees.

The contestants were told there were two spots left in the game. They then had to find 'gold' hidden around them and drop it in into slots for one of the newcomers, with each coin making that cage descend a little further. In the end, it was Alexander and Fozia who returned to the game as Faithfuls, with Jack sent home.

Viewers were enthralled by the latest twist, as many had predicted we hadn't seen the last of the trio. But plenty of fans were also distracted by the fact that Jack, Alexander and Fozia were all in the same clothes that they had been wearing when they stepped off the train close to a week ago.

"Why are they still wearing the same clothes 4 days later," one posted on X. "Right I'm gonna sound dumb, how come they were still in the same clothes as they were on day one?" asked another.

"Hollllld up Why are these 3 wearing the same clothes from the first day??" asked somebody else. "Have they been in those clothes for days?" wondered another. "Christ, how long have those people from the train been wearing this same clothes?" posted one viewer.

However, others pointed out that show bosses probably had the three wear the same outfits to make it look as if they had been waiting around since leaving the train.

"Love that they’ve made the train people wear the clothes they arrived in as if they’ve been up there for a week," said one. Someone else wrote: "Making the train leavers dress in the same clothes they were in 4 days ago and hanging them in cages. Camp."

There was more drama when Kas was banished after a dramatic roundtable.

So far the Faithful contestants have rooted out one Traitor, when Armani was banished last week.

But they got things wrong on Wednesday when they kicked out Kas, a Faithful. The doctor had been under suspicion from early in the competition, particularly as Armani had seemed to back him when she was still in the game. However, there were tears when he revealed that he had actually been a Faithful all along. "Faithful, what are you doing?" Winkleman asked the dismayed contestants.

Traitors Linda and Minah were also told they could try to recruit a third Traitor, following Armani's departure. They pondered whether to ask Freddie, Fozia or Anna, with the episode ending on that cliffhanger.

The Traitors airs on BBC One on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights.
