Hopefully we get as much drama from the standalone game in college football on Labor Day as we saw Sunday night. Probably not.
The LSU-Florida State game, with the last-second touchdown by LSU only to see the Tigers blow the extra point that would have sent the game to overtime, was a fun one. Clemson and Georgia Tech get the stage on Monday night, and it's not expected to be close. Clemson is a 23.5-point favorite at BetMGM.
Clemson has become one of the programs we can expect to see in the College Football Playoff every year, but last season a bit of a downward turn at least by Clemson's standards. The Tigers were 10-3 in their first season after Trevor Lawrence. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, who flashed some promise when he had to fill in for Lawrence, didn't have the season many expected of him. Perhaps that will turn around for Uiagalelei this season.
Georgia Tech is expected to have a down season, which is why the line is what it is. The talent gap between the two teams is pretty large. But hopefully they end up putting on a show.
Here's a first look at the sports betting slate for Monday:
A big Labor Day in MLB
Baseball gets its holiday spotlight, with 13 games on Monday. That includes seven afternoon games.
The best matchup is probably the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles, a couple of teams that have playoff hopes. There was no line on Monday morning at BetMGM because Baltimore's starting pitcher hadn't been announced.
The Minnesota Twins take on the New York Yankees in a battle of two teams that started the season well and have faded a bit. The Yankees still have a five-game lead in the AL East, thanks to a dramatic win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, while the Twins are tied for first in the AL Central. The Yankees are -160 favorites, which is probably too inflated based on how they've looked since the start of July.
What's the best bet?
There's not too much else on the Labor Day schedule other than one college football game and a lot of baseball. Since football will be the focus, let's take Clemson, even though they're laying a huge number. Clemson will want to make a statement to start the season and the Tigers are the clearly superior team.
