A bizarre TikTok trend has dentists on edge, with some warning there could be life-long damage to those taking part in the unusual videos.
People on TikTok have been sharing clips of them taking a nail file to their teeth and filing them down as they boast about the results to their smiles.
“I’m going to file my teeth down with a nail file because they’re not perfect, I have some ridges and we’re balling on a budget” one girl on TikTok says before using a nail file on her teeth in the video.
The videos have reportedly caused concern among dentists, because filing away at your teeth can actually be very dangerous.
Dentistry student Tara Aboumahboub, who goes by @dentara__ on TikTok, has urged people to not file their teeth and explained why.
“TikTok users, stop filing down your teeth, I’m going to freak out, let me tell you why,” she said in a TikTok video calling out the viral fad.
“If you shave down that top layer, which is the most protective layer might I add, it does not grow back,” she said.
Instead, she urged people to go to a dentist if they are unhappy with their teeth.
“Whatever you do, stop filing them – just don’t do it,” she urged.
Dental hygienist @millennial_rdh also warned against filing teeth yourself. By destroying the top layer – the enamel – it could have some pretty adverse side effects, she said.
“You could end up with extreme tooth sensitivity, or even cause enough damage to kill the tooth,” she warned.
“A dead tooth means extensive and expensive treatment if you want to keep it, don't consider doing this, seriously.”
Suhail Mohiuddin is a dentist on TikTok and said when patients come to him and ask to have their teeth filed professionally, he asks himself why their teeth are uneven in the first place.
“What are you going to do in a few years when they're uneven again and your teeth are shorter?” he asked.
