Matt Agnew's best friend defended after Abbie attack

She made it very clear last night that she thought The Bachelor’s Matt Agnew and Abbie Chatfield weren’t compatible with each other and now the astrophysicist’s best friend has been defended after airing her opinions on national TV.

Kate Scott was invited along to South Africa to meet the top two girls Matt had picked, after spending three months getting to know them on the Channel 10 reality show.

However, from the moment Kate heard that 23-year-old Abbie Chatfield was one of them, she admitted she was “concerned” about her compatibility with her best friend.

Now, Kate’s fiancé, Michael Perry, has come out to say he couldn’t be prouder of his other half, who has been mates with Matt for the past 20 years.

“I've resisted the urge to post until now, but I am so proud of my fianceè Kate and Jason on tonight's episode of #TheBachelorAU. Matt has surrounded himself with the most supportive and caring friends! Good luck Matt!,” Michael wrote.

Kate’s cousin, Mitchell Scott, also commended his family member for being honest with her opinions about Abbie.

“I haven’t tweeted about #TheBachelorAU all season, but I am so bloody proud of my cousin and unofficial sister Kate for her involvement in the show. She’s been my moral compass for many years and she’s been as genuine and authentic on the show as she always is in our family,” he tweeted.

To say the conversation between Kate and Abbie on last night’s finale was awkward would be somewhat of an understatement.

Kate pulled Abbie for a one-on-one pretty much immediately after they were introduced by a none-the-wiser Matt.

"I'm surprised you're still here because I think that you and Matt have different values,” Kate said to a shocked Abbie.

"You know, last time when I met you, there were the concerns about your age and if you're here for the same reasons or have the same sort of time line and goals that he does in life."

The encounter then got enough for Kate, who decided to walk out on Abbie so she could get her thoughts together.

While the rest of their conversation didn’t exactly go smoothly, Kate and Abbie managed to get through a few awkward questions before they returned to a smiling Matt.

The reaction to Kate’s ‘attack’ on Abbie was mixed online, with many saying she had gone too hard on the contestant and others saying that everyone should have a friend who has your back like Kate.

It wasn’t the first time Kate had aired her concerns about Matt’s decision to keep Abbie in the running to be his number one girlfriend.

In a previous episode, Kate told Matt that while she thought Abbie was “lovely”, she didn’t think “marriage isn't necessarily the be-all and end all for her.”

"I don’t think she is here for the same reasons as you. I think she is saying what you want to hear,” Kate told Matt.

It seems Kate had a big influence over Matt, as last night he picked 28-year-old chemical engineer, Chelsie McLeod, as the winner of The Bachelor Australia 2019.
