Texas Democrat smokes blunt, bong in pro-weed campaign ad
A Democrat running for the Texas House of Representatives released a pro-marijuana campaign ad Monday that depicts the candidate smoking a blunt and a bong.
The attention-grabbing ad called “It’s HIGH Time for Change in Texas” features the candidate, Sally Duval, criticizing the state’s “confusing and unclear” policies on marijuana use while appearing to use it herself.
The shot opens with Duval smoking a blunt, and the ad ends with her smoking a bong and coughing afterwards.
“You might already know what’s in this, but do you know who has no idea and no way to test it? Law enforcement,” Duval said at the start of the ad.
“They arrest people every day for marijuana possession, but they don’t have the funding to test if it’s illegal marijuana or a federally legal hemp product,” she continued.
Duval pinpointed some confusing aspects of marijuana policy in Texas.
“While marijuana remains illegal for most Texans, hemp products that can get you high — like delta-8, delta-9 and THCa — are being sold at more than 7,000 retailers statewide,” she said.
She pointed to one of the Republican lieutenant governor’s legislative charges, “Banning Delta 8 and 9,” which tasked a committee with examining the rules and making recommendations “to further regulate the sale of these products.”
“It doesn’t take a genius to figure out you can’t do both of these things,” she said. “Fortunately, we don’t have to choose between safety and legalization. We can and should have both, but it’s going to take leaders who know enough and care enough to do what’s right.”
“Texans should have the freedom to consume these products if they want to,” she added.
The Hill has reached out to the Democrat’s opponent, incumbent Texas House Rep. Carrie Isaac (R), for comment.
