Sydney street shut down over servo fire

Firefighters are battling a major blaze at a western Sydney petrol station as gas cylinders spew fire into the air.

Authorities were called to the Metro service station on Hamilton Road in Fairfield at 7pm on Wednesday evening to find it well alight.

Numerous gas cylinders are currently venting and are on fire, sparking safety concerns.

More than 50 firefighters and 17 fire trucks are currently battling the blaze, which is not contained according to a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson.

There are local evacuations in place and Sydneysiders are urged to avoid the area.

There are currently no injuries reported and no one is unaccounted for.
