In the video, people on the ride can be heard screaming with the ride roughly 10 metres off the ground as it spins around.

The swing ride quickly begins to drop unexpectedly before crashing to an abrupt halt and sending some of the passengers off the ride.

One clip shared by Xuanwo Video on Chinese Twitter-like site Weibo shows a person lying motionless near the ride.

Nine of the 16 injured remain in hospital.

The fairground has been closed indefinitely while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing, The Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The video from the ride has been shared widely on Weibo with millions of views.

Many concerned users expressed their lack of trust for fairgrounds in rural locations.

In October last year, a university student in the same province died following an accident involving a hot air balloon.
