WARNING, DISTURBING CONTENT: Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment a man lunged at police with a knife in Melbourne’s Bourke Street on Friday afternoon.
The graphic video shows a man appearing to wield a knife and making repeated attempts to stab an officer before another officer fires at the attacker.
The footage, uploaded to Twitter, also shows pedestrians alternately hovering nearby and trying to make a quick exit from the scene.
Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton confirmed the suspect had stabbed three people, one fatally, before lunging at police.
The condition of the surviving pair is unknown at this stage.
Emergency services were called to a car fire at the corner of Swanston and Bourke streets about 4.20pm on Friday.
While the vehicle was quickly extinguished, reports soon emerged of a man wielding a knife on Bourke Street.
He lunged at passersby and police before being shot.
The man was arrested and taken to hospital in a critical condition, police said. He died around 30 minutes after arriving at hospital.
Victoria Police announced on Friday evening that they were treating the attack as a terrorist incident.
