The news was confirmed over the weekend by New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who revealed that after a tip-off, the state investigated and confirmed the event was being planned.

"We were told it was going to take place,” he said to gathered press.

“We investigated and found that it might be true. There was a big wedding planned that would have violated the rules on gatherings.”

Officials said the event planned in Williamsburg was expected to attract ‘upwards of 10,000 people’ and was set to be held at a Hasidic synagogue.

Though outside of the COVID-19 cluster zone in Brooklyn, the event’s size triggered action from city officials.

It was confirmed that an order to halt the wedding was served by the city’s Sherrif Office and signed by the state health commissioner.

Organisers of the event have since confirmed that following the order only close family will attend, with other guests now agreeing to stay home.

Cuomo said at the conference that while weddings are allowed, they needed to be limited.

“Look, you can get married, you just can’t have 1,000 people at your wedding,” said Cuomo.

It comes after weddings, in general, have been put under the microscope during the pandemic.

With restrictions of number of guests, dancing, entertainment and even attire, many a crisis has cropped up online prompting intense debate around the rules.

In August a pair of newlyweds and their 18-person strong wedding party were slammed after they staged an ‘appalling’ stunt in the middle of coronavirus hotspot New York City.

In a video that went viral on TikTok and Reddit, a wedding party posed for snaps in the middle of New York’s bustling Fifth Avenue.

The party include the bride, groom, nine bridesmaids and nine groomsmen none of whom were wearing masks as they posed in the centre of one of the city’s busiest streets.
