Teen praised for heartwarming act that saved lost boy

A teen’s heartwarming act saved a lost boy who caught the wrong bus on his first day of school.

An 11-year-old was heading home on the bus on his first day of school when he realised he had gotten on the wrong bus and was heading away from home.

Without a phone or money, the Year 7 student at Holy Family Catholic High School cried because he didn’t know how to reach his home in Netherton, UK.

However, a kind-hearted Year 11 student spotted him crying and gave him $18 for taxi fare and arranged for one to pick him up at the next bus stop.

Tom O’Brien, 15, has been praised for his kind deed, which came to light when a mum of a fellow student posted about the incident on Facebook.

“There really are some truly decent kids out there!” Ruth Furlong, the mother of another Holy Family Catholic High School student, posted on Facebook.

“Alex’s first day at high school yesterday and on the bus ride home, a year 11 lad came over to them all asking how their first day went.

“He spots a new kid crying because he’s gotten on the wrong bus and it’s getting further away from where he lives.

Tom said to the boy: “It’s ok mate, don’t worry, you’ll be home soon.”

“He whipped out a tenner and arranged for a taxi to pick him up at the next bus stop and made sure he got home safe,” Ms Furlong’s post said.

Two other Year 7 students, Harry Campbell and Dylan Robson, waited with the lost boy at the bus stop until the taxi picked him up.

The taxi driver did not charge the boy for the ride, according to local outlet the Liverpool Echo.

The helpful boy was identified after his big sister Katie O’Brien commented on Ms Furlong’s post.

“Ahhh everyone it was my little brother. I’ve just been tagged in this by a friend of mine who has seen this status,” Ms O’Brien commented.

“We are so proud of Tom and it’s so lovely to know he’s a good lad in the outside world.

“The school rang our mum and left a lovely message.

“All your comments are so, so lovely they’ve had us all close to tears. Tom will hate all the attention.”
