Teens find abandoned, naked baby outside apartment complex

Teens have found a naked, newborn baby outside an apartment complex.

The baby was found in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday, about 4pm local time, Fox 13 reports. The child was taken to hospital in a non-critical condition.

He reportedly still had his umbilical cord attached.

Two teenage girls found him outside the building on the ground with a piece of cloth around his waist, Action News 5 reported.

The Memphis Police Department told Action News 5 the mum, who has since been found, has not been charged.

Police tweeted reminding people of The Tennessee Safe Haven law.

The law allows mothers of newborns to surrender unharmed babies to designated facilities within two weeks of birth without fear of being prosecuted.

Resident Edison Hagan told WREG he has never personally witnessed it himself.

“I’ve only heard stories of babies left in trash cans and things and such but not so close to where you are everyday,” he said.

He urged people not to judge the mother too harshly.
