Teens arrested 'trying to steal boat' after engine wouldn't start

Three teenagers have allegedly tried to steal a water taxi in a bizarre robbery in Melbourne.

Police were called to the scene on the Yarra River at about 4.30am on Sunday morning after witnesses saw two boys standing on the boat as it floated away.

A third, who was running along the wharf, was taken down by a passerby.

With no engine power, the boys tried to escape by jumping in the water and swimming, but they didn’t get very far.

The late night escapade left a 16-year-old and 13-year-old wrapped in hypothermia blankets after being pulled from the river before being taken to hospital.

An 18-year-old was taken into custody but has since been released.

Police are continuing their investigations.
