Teen killed seconds after removing seatbelt for selfie

The grieving parents of a teenage girl who died after taking her seatbelt off to take a selfie have launched a campaign so no other parents have to endure their pain.

Kailee Mills was on her to a Halloween party near her home in Texas in October last year when she unbuckled her seatbelt to snap a picture with one of her three friends in the car.

Seconds later, the car rolled, killing the 16-year-old instantly.

“The car went off the road. She was ejected and she died instantly,” her heartbroken father, David Mills, told KRIV TV news.

“All the other kids in the car, they had their seat belts on and they all survived with very little injury.”

Authorities later said they suspect the driver was speeding when the car lost control.

The Mills family are now determined to use their daughter’s tragic death to reiterate the importance of seatbelt safety.

They have launched the Kailee Mills Foundation, which works to provide stickers for car windows and motorbike helmets, encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up.

“Our daughter would be here today if she had been wearing her seatbelt,” Mr Mills added.

“We want our daughter’s story to serve as a reminder to others about the importance of wearing seat belts.

“Our goal is to prevent other families from having to go through the same pain and loss that we are going through.”
