A man charged with sexual assaulting a woman at a Melbourne CBD adult entertainment venue has a psychiatric illness, his lawyer says.
Begonet Ayaliew, 18, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link on Friday, charged with multiple offences over an assault at an Elizabeth Street venue on May 6.
"My client suffers a significant psychiatric illness," his defence lawyer told the court, as she opposed a request by media for access to Ayaliew's charges.
Ayaliew is charged with assault with intent to commit a sexual offence, false imprisonment, abduction for a sexual purpose and intentionally and recklessly cause injury.
Police have previously said an unknown man approached a woman on May 6 at the venue on Elizabeth St and Flinders Lane and punched her in the head.
Ayaliew was charged over the incident one day after detectives released a photo taken from surveillance footage and appealed for public help to identify the suspect.
He will remain in custody and his case returns to court on August 3.
