Teenager hit and killed by bus near high school

A teenager has died after being struck by a bus north of Newcastle as he rode his bike near a high school.

The boy, 15, was cycling along Mount Hall Road in Raymond Terrace at about 8.30am on Tuesday before he crossed the intersection at Clyde Circuit.

While crossing, he was struck by a passing bus.

The boy became trapped under the vehicle, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia as witnesses rushed to his aid.

“It was an incredibly distressing scene for emergency services and bystanders who witnessed the incident,” Inspector Matt Hawke from NSW Ambulance said.

“It is a tough day for everybody involved.”

NSW Police could not confirm to Yahoo News Australia whether he attended nearby Irrawang High School.

Emergency services rushed to the scene where paramedics failed to revive the boy, who died at the scene.

The ABC reported the boy’s family were at the scene and were visibly distressed.

Investigators set up a crime scene where road closures were put in place and the Crash Investigation Unit commenced inquiries.

The bus will be taken for further examination and the 41-year-old man driving the bus will undergo mandatory testing.

Police inquiries are ongoing.
